communique

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela regrets the groundless, interventionist and irresponsible statements regarding democracy and exercise of human rights in our country by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’a Al Hussein.

Once again, the High Commissioner sets a selective, subjective, highly politicized and biased position regarding the human rights situation in Venezuela all in flagrant violation of the norms and principles that must govern his actions.

Since the outset of his mandate, Mr. Al Hussein has endangered the refinement of his position by placing it at the service of the permanent aggression strategy against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. It is no coincidence that each statement made by the High Commissioner is governed by an encounter of the most extreme and anti-democratic Venezuelan opposition.

This time around the High Commissioner in his desperate obsession against Venezuela makes value judgements that are clearly contradicted by the reports and opinions of the United Nations Human Rights Council Independent Expert, Alfred de Zayas, who recently visited the country and gathered information freely on the ground on the real state of democracy and human rights in Venezuela dismantling the idea of an alleged humanitarian crisis.

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela categorically rejects that the High Commissioner pretends to judge the electoral process in the country, without a mandate or power to do. This undermines the willingness of the vast majority and the political opposition who are determined to settle their differences by exercising their democratic and legitimate right to vote.

The High Commissioner’s involvement with the assorted attack against Venezuela is rude. Hence, he remains conspiratorially silent in the face of the negative impact on the enjoyment of economic, social and cultural rights and on the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States Government and its regional and world servile allies. With this attitude he remains beyond the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action, as well as, the resolution that originated the Human Rights Council, politicizing human rights to impose an anachronistic and univocal view of the world.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates its unyielding commitment to human rights in accordance with the Venezuelan Constitution and the international treaties both ratified and subscribed by the Republic, as well as, its commitment to continue working together with the Human Rights Council and other United Nations organizations.
